Project Management in the Present EraProject management has been in existence for several decades, but the definition and the approach for managing the project is different in the present century. The success as well as the failure of the project was more dependent on the project manager as he is the person responsible for the whole project. The manager should have leadership skills and the ability to lead the team. The different steps of project management are carried by different teams and all the team players work on the project concurrently without any confusion. More than just a list of steps explaining the techniques involved, strategic thinking and artificial intelligence has entered into project management. Project management is no more a mechanical activity but this activity involves the knowledge about several soft skills and the ability to apply these soft skills. Only by applying the soft skills and following the steps in the process, a project can succeed. Despite of the different steps involved in managing the project, many projects actually fail. This is because, projects are now termed as team works and the lack of communication in the team and the lack of team building strategies lead to the failure of the project. More than specific steps, the leadership quality and the teamwork are now essential for the success of the project. The projects are often split up as mini projects and they are handled separately. Integration has become an essential part of project management these days. Each mini project is considered as a project and the members of the team work separately to reach the goals. Constant monitoring of the intermediate results is done to know the status of the project. The project flows sequentially and any errors in the previous step will multiply in the future steps. Rather than referring to the documents to understand the progress of the project, the present century project management looks at real time statistics and rely more on real time monitoring. This real time monitoring helps the manager to identify the flaws in advance before they can have any adverse effect on the project. By closely watching the project, various risk opportunities are identified and several hasardous results are completely avoided. Risk management has become an important aspect of project management where the potential risks are identified and the causes are cleared before the risk enters into the next step. Risk methodologies have also been devised that help the organisation to overcome the risks. Certain risks cannot be avoided and the company must be ready to face such risks and minimise the effects of risk. More than following a sequence of steps, project management involves systematic plans and reviews that concentrate more on what the customer requires. The ultimate aim of projects is to meet and exceed the expectations of the customer. With the increasing competition in all the fields, the companies are trying to improve their methodologies for retaining its customer base. The efforts and steps are then prioritised based on the needs of the end user and various aspects of project management are being done concurrently. . |
