What Is Project Management?
Project management deals with different steps and strategies that are used for achieving the project goal. Each project has its own goal, which has to be attained within the specific time and the specific standards. The goal of the project may be set to deliver some product or service for the customer. Different projects require different managements depending on the goal of the project under consideration. Project management techniques try to reach the goals following a set of processes.
Steps in project management
Though there are no specific process for project management, there are certain steps to be followed but how the steps are followed are dependent on the project under consideration.
Initiation
Initiation is the first step in the project management where the long term and the short term goals of the project are specified clearly. A deep analysis of the project requirements is done and the requirements of the end product are clearly specified. When this starting step is not performed correctly, the entire project will fail to produce the desired results.
Design and planning
Based on the requirements and the available resources, a project plan is formulated. The design step of project management provides a base for the product. The prototype is also defined and the project is carried out in the designed path.
Execution
Execution is a crucial step in project management and in this step; the actual physical shape is given for the project. The design of the project is closely followed and the steps are taken according to the previous plan.
Monitor and controlling
The process that is executed is often monitored and controlled by the control procedures of project management. This step is responsible for fine tuning the entire process as all the deviation are identified and rectified. If necessary, the project is taken to the previous step to perform the necessary changes and then the next step is taken.
Testing
Testing is another step in project management where the project is tested to check if the product or service meets all the requirements. If some of the requirements are missing, then the previous steps are repeated to find out where the mistake lies.
Closing
After producing the desired product or service, the project is closed and the contract is ended with the client. This is the last step in the project management where all the previous steps are committed.
The advantage of project management methodology is that, any step can be rolled back and documents of the previous steps will be maintained for future reference. This incremental procedure will minimise the risks and the mistakes can be corrected before something serious happens. The flow of the project will be logical and meaningful when the steps are followed correctly. In project management, the output of the previous step is fed as input of the next step and none of the steps can be missed.
